Virginia Rosales wins the Relève étoile Paul-Gérin-Lajoie Award from the FRQSC

December 16, 2021

Virginia Rosales, a postdoctoral fellow in management, supervised by Professor Linda Rouleau, has received the Relève étoile Paul-Gérin-Lajoie Award from the Fonds de recherche – Société et culture (FRQSC) for November, for her article titled “The impostor syndrome: language barriers in organizational ethnography,” published in the Journal of Organizational Ethnography.

The purpose of Virginia’s study was to open up a discussion on organizational ethnography, based on her own experience. Her article examines the research process illustrating the language barriers encountered doing an ethnography at the same time she learned the local language.

She calls for awareness of the influence of the ethnographer’s language skills and shows the importance of discussing this in relation to the way we teach and learn ethnography, research practice and diversity in academia.

“I am delighted to receive this distinction for my paper on language barriers. For me they represent a fundamental aspect of research in a globalized society,” she said, thanking the Fonds de recherche du Québec.

The Relève étoile competition is intended to promote research careers and recognize exceptional research contributions by university students, postdoctoral fellows and members of professional bodies conducting advanced research, in all the disciplines covered by the 3 Quebec research funds.
