HEC Montréal honours the academic career of Professor John P. Meyer

On the recommendation of HEC Montréal, the Université de Montréal will confer an honorary doctorate upon Professor John P. Meyer, a globally renowned authority in organizational psychology. The honorary distinction will be presented during HEC Montréal’s convocation ceremony for master’s and graduate diploma (DESS) recipients, to be held on 1 December 2025 at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts.

 

A globally recognized scientific contribution

John P. Meyer received his PhD from The University of Western Ontario in 1978, where he serves as Full Professor and Chair of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Programme. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering research on organizational commitment and change, work motivation, and leadership.

His work has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, the Journal of Management, Human Relations, and the Academy of Management Journal. His publications have been cited over 165,000 times, according to Google Scholar, underscoring their significance and relevance in both scholarly and professional communities.

In 2008, a review ranked him among the 30 most influential researchers in the fields of management and business studies and more recently he was included in Standford/Elesvier’s “World Top 2% Scientists”. He has received numerous awards, including the Hellmut Prize for Achievement in Research from Western University and the Choice Magazine Academic Book of the Year Award for Commitment in the Workplace: Theory, Research, and Application (Sage Publications, 1997).

Professor Meyer is also a fellow of several prestigious scientific associations, including the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the International Association for Applied Psychology, and the Royal Society of Canada.

 

A reference for professional and scientific communities

Professor Meyer’s influence extends well beyond the university setting. His work on employee commitment—particularly his three-component model—has had far-reaching societal implications at a time when workforce retention has become a strategic priority for organizations. He is regularly invited to collaborate with research teams and to participate in scientific events in Canada and abroad, including at HEC Montréal.

By awarding him this honorary doctorate, HEC Montréal celebrates the excellence of his career, the relevance of his research, and his outstanding contribution to the understanding of organizational behaviour.
