Three new short graduate programs to address transition challenges

March 24, 2026

HEC Montréal is expanding its range of graduate-level training with the creation of three short graduate programs offered in French, and relating to the challenges of sustainable transition.

The new programs are:

  • Microprogramme en économie circulaire [Short Graduate Program in Circular Economy]
  • Microprogramme en transition énergétique [Short Graduate Program in Energy Transition]
  • Microprogramme en décroissance soutenable [Short Graduate Program in Sustainable Degrowth]

These short graduate programs are designed for students with a bachelor’s degree wishing to increase their knowledge through a short, practice-oriented training course. They can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.

These programs are mostly offered in person. However, certain courses in energy transition and in circular economy may be taken in hybrid format, i.e., alternating between in-person and remote sessions.

Accelerated admissions

Short graduate programs in circular economy and in energy transition provide access, under certain conditions, to a D.E.S.S. en gestion – développement durable [Graduate Diploma in Management – Sustainable Development], and eventually, a maîtrise en management et développement durable [MSc in Management and Sustainable Development].

The short graduate program in sustainable degrowth may eventually serve as an accelerated pathway to a D.E.S.S. en gestion – innovation sociale [Graduate Diploma in Management – Social Innovation] and a maîtrise en gestion (M. Sc.) – gestion de l’innovation sociale [MSc in Social Innovation Management].

About these programs

Circular Economy

This innovative short graduate program is focused on the needs of organizations, an increasing number of which are setting circularity goals for themselves. The program covers the foundations, definitions and applications of the circular economy, and more broadly, the issues surrounding sustainable development and its management. It addresses, among other things, levers for action, emerging practices, food security, energy and urban challenges.

Energy Transition

This program explores the complexity of the energy sector, ranging from production sources to consumption sectors. For instance, it offers an economic analysis of key environmental issues: their causes and characteristics, the role and modes of government intervention, and an international perspective. It also addresses energy sector regulations, linking them to the products and services offered and issues of pricing and marketing options.

Sustainable Degrowth

The unique course offered in this short graduate program equips students with practical tools to contribute to sustainable degrowth within organizations. Students in this program are encouraged to critically examine the economic and technical systems in our societies, and to explore sustainable alternatives to current models. Experiential activities involving degrowth initiatives are offered in this program through Campus buissonnier.
