New NBI-HEC Montréal fund
A $5 million fund managed by our students
April 25, 2019
National Bank Investments Inc. (NBI) has just created a $5 million fund to be managed entirely by HEC Montréal students: the NBI-HEC Montréal Fund.
It will let the students manage a multi-asset portfolio and respond to changing market conditions. “This new fund gives us a chance to apply what we’ve learned in the classroom about financial markets,” explains Samuel Vallée, a Master of Science (MSc) – Financial Engineering student heading the fund.
The students managing the fund will have different roles, depending on their designated group (investments, investor relations, research, development, and information technology). The team will be supervised by Associate Professor Tolga Cenesizoglu and Full-time Faculty Lecturer Alain Elkaim, who also co-ordinates the National Bank Financial trading room at HEC Montréal.
“Our students’ involvement in the NBI-HEC Montréal Fund will let them build on their academic skills with the experience of managing actual assets using industry best practices,” according to the two supervisors. “It’s a highly valuable experience for them, one that will give them a tremendous advantage when they launch their careers.”
Note that the National Bank has partnered with HEC Montréal on numerous initiatives for many years now, in particular the Institute for Entrepreneurship National Bank| HEC Montréal and the Accélérateur Banque Nationale – HEC Montréal.
