Annual insurance premium (August 16, 2020 to August 15, 2021)

The annual $658 premium is included in the tuition fees of all international students (newly admitted and current students) for Fall term 2020. You must pay these fees, whether you are in Canada or not, unless you can submit proof of coverage under RAMQ or the CFE-HEC pack in HEC en ligne.

This measure was taken to ensure all students have coverage, no matter when they arrive in Canada.

If you arrive:

  • Between August 16 and December 18, 2020
You must pay the full premium, unless you provide us proof of coverage under RAMQ or the CFE-HEC pack—the only two options for exemption from Sun Life coverage—in which case we will credit $658 to your account.

  • Between December 19 and December 31, 2020
    You have two options:
    1. Contact us so we can adjust your insurance plan. You can receive coverage at $60 a week (for a maximum of $120). As of January 1, you must pay $434 for the Sun Life plan, unless you provide us proof of coverage under RAMQ or the CFE-HEC pack.
    2. Choose to continue with the annual premium you have already paid.
  • Between January 1 and April 30, 2021
When we have received proof that you have arrived (boarding pass or newly issued study permit) in Canada, we will:
    • refund the annual $658 premium; the amount will be credited to your account.
    • apply the $434 Sun Life coverage (from January 1 to August 15) to Winter and Summer 2021 terms.

  • Starting May 1, 2021
When we have received proof that you have arrived (boarding pass or newly issued study permit) in Canada, we will:
      • refund the annual $658 premium; the amount will be credited to your account.
      • apply the $269 Sun Life coverage (from May1 to August 15) to Summer 2021 term.
If you qualify for a reversal, the amount will be credited to your account by November 1, 2021. There is no action required on your part. If your file is not up to date by November 1, please contact us.

Sun Life Financial

International students are automatically registered for medical insurance from Sun Life Financial, which is provided by HEC Montréal. The cost is applied to your school fees.

Possible exemptions

Premium reimbursed

If you qualify for an exemption, the initial Sun Life Financial insurance premium will be reimbursed to you. Just send proof of your eligibility (RAMQ) to HEC en ligne before the deadline for tuition fee payments.

Supplemental health insurance

Although the School does not insist upon it, students are free to opt for supplemental insurance. This type of insurance can work well for items that are not covered by Sun Life Financial or RAMQ, such as dental, optometry and long-term travel. These areas are also covered by some private insurers.
