Financial Assistance for Participation in Scientific Activities

The objective of this financial assistance is to support students' research and scientific publishing efforts and to assist them in their job search process.

In accordance with the available funding, the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office can grant funding of up to $5,000 over the duration of studies.

Please note that the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office accepts to provide funding to one speaker only (professor, researcher or student from the School as author or co-author) for the presentation of a paper at a scientific conference.

Applications require the PhD program director’s approval and funding availability. Priority will be given to doctorate presenting papers or participating at a job fair.

Maximum Amount

$5,000 over the duration of the doctoral studies

Funded Activities

  • Presentation of a scientific paper at a conference or doctoral consortium.
  • Attendance at a conference (no presentation).
  • Attendance to a conference / congress as part of job fair.
  • Participation to a writing or scientific communication workshop, or a doctoral school (Summer school or doctoral consortium).
  • Participation to a methodological training.
  • Analysis software required for your thesis.

Deadline

Applications can be submitted at any time during doctoral studies.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Enrolment in the doctoral program at HEC Montréal at the time of application.
  • Confirmation that the paper has been accepted for presentation at the conference, or registration confirmation of conference/congress, job fair, workshop or doctoral school, etc.
  • Supervisor’s approval of your application for participation to this scientific activity.
  • Not have already received $5,000 or more from this financial assistance during doctoral studies.
  • Submission of the application BEFORE the scientific activity.

Eligible Expenses

  • This funding is intended to cover the following fees:
    • Registration fees for the activity.
    • Accomodation fees (Hotel, bed & breakfast, university dorm room, etc.).
    • Travel: Plane, train, bus, taxi, personal vehicle ($/km), etc.
    • Association membership fees if necessary to obtain a better price for the activity.
    • Per diem (the amount varies depending on the location of the conference or doctoral consortium):
Note: In the case of conferences and doctoral consortiums held in Montreal, only the registration and membership fees will be reimbursed. A maximum of $500 can be allocated for software required for your thesis. All purchase must be processed via a request (JIRA) to Direction des technologies de l’information.

Ineligible Expenses

  • Meals not included in the conference registration fee. 
  • Other expenses not mentioned in the eligible expenses.

  • No applications submitted on paper will be considered.
  • Please allow at least 10 business days to process the application.
