Linda Rouleau, winner of the Award for Research Excellence

Professor Linda Rouleau from the Department of Management is the 2025 recipient of the Pierre Laurin Research Award. This Award for Research Excellence, which she has won for the second time in 14 years, honors her exemplary scientific career and her contribution to the School’s renown.
She holds a master’s degree in sociology from Université Laval and a PhD in administration from HEC Montréal, where she joined as a faculty member in 1997. She has been a co-director of the Strategy as Practice Study Group since its creation in 2006 and her career path been shaped by a desire to develop a nuanced understanding of organizational and strategic practices in various management contexts.
Global influence
Her research trajectory has focused on three main areas: middle managers, strategy as practice and extreme contexts. With 40 articles, 5 books, 43 book chapters and 11 conference proceedings, as well as 138 scientific presentations to her name, she is acknowledged as a leading figure in these international research communities.

In addition to being widely published in top-tier journals such as the Journal of Management Studies and the Academy of Management Review, her work has helped to enrich qualitative approaches in management, notably through organizational ethnography and biographical interviews. Through her collaborations with other researchers in Canada and at various European universities, her active involvement in organizing prestigious conferences, and her participation on several editorial boards, she has helped position HEC Montréal as a reference hub in the field of strategy as an internationally recognized practice.
She has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada’s Academy of Social Sciences (Francophone Division) since 2016. A key component of her career involves the supervision of research students, as she has supervised or co-supervised 10 doctoral dissertations and 19 master’s theses and supervised projects. She has also been a member and external examiner on numerous thesis committees both in Canada and abroad.
