Passing of Jean-Pierre Frénois

The members of the HEC Montréal community were saddened to learn of the passing of Jean-Pierre Frénois, Honorary Professor of Finance, on August 21, 2026.

Jean-Pierre Frénois was a professor at HEC Montréal for more than three decades. He joined the School in 1974 and was an associate professor in the Department of Finance from 1982 to 2007, before being named honorary professor upon his retirement.

During the course of his career, which included both academic and administrative responsibilities, Professor Frénois served as director of the MBA and DSA programs, co-director of the DESS in Corporate Finance and head of various programs and concentrations in finance. His research work and publications focused on areas such as investment projects valuation, risk analysis, business valuation and decision support systems in finance. 

His other areas of interest also included the applications of artificial intelligence in finance as well as the use of multimedia technologies and the Internet in education.

One of the main honors he received was the 2001 Guy-Charrette Award for his paper entitled “L’analyse du risque dans les décisions financières” [Risk Analysis in Financial Decisions], published in the French-language business management journal, Gestion. He was also named Professor of the Year for the MBA Program in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
