Passing of Henri Barki

The members of the HEC Montréal community were saddened to learn of the passing of Henri Barki on May 19, 2026.

Henri Barki began teaching in the School’s Department of Information Technologies (IT) in 1989. He served as Director of Research from 1998 to 2001 and subsequently held the Canada Research Chair in Information Technology Implementation and Management from 2003 to 2017.  

A pioneer in IT research, he was one of the world’s most influential researchers in this field. He published 45 articles in the most prestigious journals, in addition to acting as an editor, reviewer or editorial board member for several of them, including MIS Quarterly and Information Systems Research. He also supervised more than 40 Master’s and PhD students.

He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2003 and won the Best Paper Award from the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada three times (1983, 1984 and 1993). HEC Montréal also presented him with its Gaëtan Morin Research Award in 1992 and its Pierre Laurin Research Award in 1989 and again in 1994. He was named Professor Emeritus in November 2018, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to teaching, research, and the development and renown of the School.

He will be remembered by his close colleagues and the academic community as a deeply committed scholar, whose scientific contributions, dedication to research and intellectual influence have left a lasting mark on all those who had the privilege of working with him.
