HEC Montréal among the global leaders in research

January 8, 2026

HEC Montréal has left its mark upon two recent international rankings that assess the impact and performance of research universities.

Scholar GPS

According to Scholar GPS, the School is ranked 53rd worldwide for research impact in the Business and Management category. This new American ranking system aggregates metadata corresponding to research publications.

Scholar GPS bases its rankings on the quality and quantity of scholarly activity in institutions, to determine the most influential universities in research. American universities make up 65 of the 100 institutions that dominate the list of the best in Business and Management, with the University of Pennsylvania coming out on top. This list also includes fifteen Canadian institutions, including HEC Montréal, which is ranked 4th in Canada.

Highly ranked researchers

Scholar GPS also evaluates researchers based on the number of publications, and on the impact (citations) and quality (h-index) of their work.

Gilbert Laporte, Professor Emeritus at HEC Montréal, ranks 15th globally in the Business and Management category. He is ranked 10th globally and 1st in Canada if we consider only the Management Information Systems discipline.

Eight other researchers from the School also appear in the Canadian ranking of Top Scholars by Expertise, which lists around one hundred:

  • Jean-François Cordeau (23rd)
  • Pierre Hansen (25th)
  • Danny Miller (35th)
  • Georges Dionne (39th)
  • Georges Zaccour (41st)
  • Patrick Cohendet (51st)
  • Christian Vandenberghe (52nd)
  • David Doloreux (88th)

Most influential countries

In the Business and Management category, Canada ranks 4th among roughly 131 countries that are recognized for the number, quality and activity of their researchers in this sector. It is the number and impact of publications throughout their careers that are measured. The top three spots in this ranking are occupied by the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany.

Research Infosource

HEC Montréal, through its affiliation with the Université de Montréal (UdeM), is also ranked 2nd in Canada for research activity, as per Research Infosource’s Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities 2025 ranking.

According to this ranking, which compares the levels of research funding in Canadian universities, UdeM received a total of $775 million in research grants in 2025. It also received $104 million as revenue from the private sector (2nd in Canada) and $132 million from non-profit organizations (3rd in Canada).

The top Canadian university in this regard is the University of Toronto (in the category of universities with a faculty of medicine).

Over the past three years, UdeM and its affiliated schools have made steady progress in this ranking, rising from 4th place in 2022 to 3rd place last year, and now to 2nd place this year.
