Research and knowledge transfer activities continue to skyrocket in 2024–2025

HEC Montréal experienced a year of growth and success in 2024–2025 in terms of research and knowledge transfer. Total funding for its research and knowledge transfer activities peaked at $62 million, an increase of nearly $16 million compared to last year.

Strategic partnerships and more grants

The School’s research community has established a growing number of partnerships with private and public organizations, as well as with other academic institutions. More than 173 research and knowledge transfer agreements and contracts were concluded between HEC Montréal and various partners – up 30% from the previous year.

Furthermore, the success rate of grant proposals over five years is 60%, making it higher than provincial and federal averages. This demonstrates the ability of HEC Montréal’s research community to effectively meet the innovation and impact criteria required in the Canadian scientific arena.

 

Notable achievements

The year’s highlights include the creation of the Chair in Organizational Ethics and Artificial Intelligence Governance in collaboration with IVADO, FRQ, Confiance IA, OBVIA and the HEC Montréal Foundation. 

Another accomplishment is the creation of the Trottier Chair in Energy Transition, Governance and Participation, a tripartite chair with Polytechnique Montréal, Université de Montréal and HEC Montréal. 

Other achievements include: 

  • the creation of LEO Décision by HEC Montréal’s Pôle D, a data collection platform for business leaders;
  • the launch of Panorama by Famille en affaires HEC Montréal, based on several studies on family businesses in Quebec;
  • the Transitions HEC Montréal initiative;
  • the 50th anniversary of the Alphonse and Dorimène Desjardins International Institute for Cooperatives (IICADD);
  • the School’s increasing leadership in IVADO’s R3AI Project.

 

Funding and investments

Several research projects and initiatives successfully secured major public and private investments as well as significant donations. These investments include:

  • $1.5 million from NSERC and SAP for a project to improve data storytelling skills;
  • $2.3 million from NSERC, MITACS and 12 partner organizations for a project led by Polytechnique Montréal on natural language processing for industrial applications;
  • Over $13 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the Government of Quebec and partner organizations for infrastructure projects led by Polytechnique Montréal, with collaboration from the School.

 

The research community’s impact in numbers

  • 307 journal articles were published, including 32 in journals ranked in the Financial Times and University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) lists
  • 24 full professors have accumulated over 5,000 citations in the course of their careers
  • six faculty members have overshot 15,000 citations in the course of theirs

 

The School in research rankings

  • 44th in the world and 3rd in Canada in the Financial Times Research Insights Ranking
  • 93rd in the world for its number of research publications, according to the UTD ranking
