Creation of the Canada Research Chair in Sequential Decision-Making Under Uncertainty

October 23, 2025

HEC Montréal announces the launch of the Canada Research Chair in Sequential Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, held by Assistant Professor Maryam Daryalal.

This new research chair’s mission is to bridge the gap between theoretical advancements and practical applications, thereby enabling organizations across various sectors to make more informed and robust decisions in uncertain environments.

The Chair will focus on two interdependent areas:

The work will primarily focus on designing innovative decision-making rules to address algorithmic challenges related to integer variables and correlated uncertainties. It will also deal with improving the scalability and performance of algorithms by analyzing the impact of problem structures and uncertainties, and by integrating machine learning paradigms.

The developed methodologies will be applied to actual sequential decision-making problems in areas including supply chain management, the healthcare sector, telecommunications industry, electrical systems and data generation.

About Maryam Daryalal

Maryam Daryalal has been an assistant professor in the Department of Decision Sciences at HEC Montréal since 2022. She earned her PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto. She is a member of the Group for Research in Decision Analysis (GERAD), the Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation (CIRRELT), and the Research Regroupement on Supply Chains and Mobility Systems, as part of IVADO’s R3AI program.

Her honors from INFORMS include the Best Paper Award from the Telecommunications and Network Analytics Section, and the Judith Liebman Award.
