Workshops are free and open to all HEC Montréal students. They are based on real-life work situations, designed to help you navigate interactions and take place in a relaxed atmosphere.

SPEAKING (workshops for intermediate and intermediate-advanced students)

Présentez le bilan d'un projet réussi

Learn how to give a professional presentation in French that is well structured, uses the proper tone and clearly communicates your ideas. In this workshop, you will practise giving a presentation to enhance your language skills, build confidence and prepare for this type of real-life situation.

Parlez clairement, prononcez mieux

Whether you are working on a group project, giving an oral presentation or speaking with co-workers, you need to be able to clearly express your ideas. This workshop focuses on sounds that are difficult to pronounce in French in order to improve your diction and fine-tune the flow and intonation of your speech.

Découvrez le français du Québec

Do your friends and co-worker use French words that you don’t understand? As with all languages, there are differences between familiar and formal speech in French. In this workshop, you will learn some of the particularities of spoken French in Quebec, including pronunciation, vocabulary and syntax.

Faites-vous entendre!

Whether you’re at school, work or with friends, you need to be able to defend your ideas. In this workshop, you will learn how to give your opinion with conviction on simple and complex topics, and to respond to other people’s arguments.

L'actualité, parlons-en!

In this workshop, you will practise discussing current events in a relaxed environment. You will present a topic relating to current events, comment on other people’s topics and ask your classmates questions.

Comparez les particularités de la culture du monde des affaires au Québec et ailleurs

Have you noticed differences between Quebec culture and that of your home country? Come share your knowledge and observations in open, organic conversations during which you will discuss differences between business culture here and in other countries.

Writing (workshops for students who are francophone or have an intermediate-advanced level)

Révisez l'accord des participes passés

This workshop will clear up confusion about past participle agreement rules (past participles used with avoir and être, and past participles of pronominal verbs). You will also review particular cases when past participles agree or are invariable, and put this knowledge into practice.

Utilisez efficacement Antidote

Did you know that Antidote is installed on all library computers? This software includes spell check and several dictionaries (e.g., thesaurus, collocations). In this practical workshop, you will learn some helpful tips for using Antidote, how to choose the right words and word combinations, and the types of errors the software will catch.

Planifiez la rédaction d'un mémoire, d'un projet supervisé ou d'une thèse

Workshop reserved for graduate and doctoral students

In this workshop, you will learn about the different parts of a master’s thesis, a classic doctoral thesis or thesis in the form of papers, or the writing portion of a supervised project. You will be shown thesis excerpts to give you an idea of how these types of large writing projects must be organized (e.g., type and order of components, heading and sub-heading hierarchy) and learn helpful tips for writing an effective paper.

Workshop reserved for graduate and doctoral students

This workshop addresses several questions pertaining to proper grammar, style and bibliographic referencing specifically for thesis papers, dissertations and the writing portion of supervised projects. You will learn what is expected in scientific discourse at the graduate and doctoral levels in order to avoid common errors. You will also learn how to cite your sources, share your methods of organizing information and review several standards.
