Registration is now open to the public for Leadership Nouveau 2016

Friday October 7, 2016

Leadership Nouveau is a conference which examines the challenges of arts management in the 21st century. It is organized by HEC Montréal, one of Canada’s leading business schools, and will take place on November 7th at the Paley Center for Media, in New York. This 2016 edition’s theme is the Consumer Experience in the Arts and Culture and its goal is to shed light on how consumers interact with the arts.

In 1999, Joe Pine and Jim Gilmore launched their seminal book entitled The Experience Economy, on how organizations can stage unique experiences for their clients. Since then, a growing number of arts and culture managers have adapted their strategies to enhance the total experience of their patrons.

Today, as technology is becoming a great enabler of arts creation and participation (National Endowment for the Arts, 2015), more people participate in the arts through electronic media. Technology has not only transformed the way people interact with the arts, through virtual reality or streaming, to prepare, deepen or prolong their experience, but it has also given managers access to a wide range of data they can use to reach and retain audiences. This renewed vision of arts consumption, coupled with increased competition for leisure time, has an impact on how the art is presented, on the evolution and enrichment of the arts-going experience, and on the entirety of each client’s relationship with the arts organization.

Speakers who will discuss the new consumer experience in the arts and culture include John Lanasa (Brooklyn Academy of Music, NY), Gorgun Taner (Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, Turkey), Kathryn Jones (VirtualArts.TV, NY), Alain Dancyger (Grands Ballets Canadiens, Montréal), Anamarta de Pizarro (Iberoamerican Theater Festival, Bogota) and many others. Robert Scully, host of PBS World Show, will sum up discussions at the end of the conference.

The conference will be held at the Paley Center for Media, on W 52nd Street in New York, a few steps from the MOMA. Participants will be invited to our “après-conference” reception, hosted by the Québec Government Office in New York. More information about the event can be found on our website. Space is limited, so please register now

Leadership Nouveau is organized by HEC Montréal, the Carmelle and Rémi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management and the Master of Management in International Arts Management, a program offered by HEC Montréal and the Division of Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, in collaboration with SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan.
