HEC Montréal to host its own international case competition

May 6, 2026

HEC Montréal announces the creation of the HEC Montréal International Case Competition (HMIC), an international case-solving competition that will bring together participants from some of the world’s leading business schools for the event in Montréal. Its inaugural edition will be held from November 1 to 8, 2026, at the Hélène Desmarais Building in downtown Montréal.

HMIC will bring together delegations from 16 universities, for a total of 64 students. Over the course of one week, these teams will focus intensively on solving real business challenges proposed by partner organizations.

The competition will be based on two complementary formats:

  • An intensive 6-hour case, designed to test analytical rigour, strategic creativity and the ability to work under pressure.
  • A 24-hour strategic challenge, allowing for deeper reflection on a complex business issue.

Participants will present their solutions to panels of business professionals and academic experts.

HMIC reflects the School’s commitment to develop innovative educational experiences and continue training the next generation of leaders capable of tackling major challenges in the business world.

A competition, and also an experience

HEC Montréal aims to provide not just a competition, but also a complete international experience for the participants. The week will include activities that foster exchanges between delegations, as well as opportunities to connect with judges and event partners. The final round will be followed by a closing gala celebrating the winning teams.

The competition is co-organized by the University Competitions Service and an organizing committee composed of students and recent graduates of HEC Montréal. The organizing committee is chaired by Guillaume Payette, while Anne Bourhis, Director of the University Competitions Service, will head the project at the institutional level.

“The creation of the HEC Montréal International Case Competition is a major milestone in the development of our university competition ecosystem. This event will allow us to welcome some of the world’s best universities to Montréal and offer our students an international educational experience.”

Anne Bourhis

“The HMIC aims to bring together in Montréal students representing the full spectrum of international management talent. We want to create not only a demanding academic competition, but also a memorable experience that fosters exchanges between universities, cultures and future leaders.”

Guillaume Payette
