An illuminating book on AI in organizational contexts

The Design of Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence for the Workplace

July 16, 2025

The book The Design of Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence for the Workplace, co-edited by Constantinos K. Coursaris and Pierre-Majorique Léger, professors in the Department of Information Technologies and co-directors of Tech3Lab, in collaboration with PhD student Burak Öz and Joerg Beringer, co-founder of ProContext, has been published by Springer.

How can organizations design artificial intelligence (AI) systems that are aligned with human values and operational realities? This the question that the book attempts to answer, by examining the possibilities and challenges associated with the development of AI in organizational contexts of use. It provides an overview of the considerations involved in designing AI-enabled systems, their application in the workplace and the corresponding user experience. To this end, it presents scientific perspectives on the design of human-centered AI, as well as case studies from multiple industries ranging from aerospace and automotive to retail, finance, and healthcare.

“This book lays the intellectual foundation for the next generation of AI systems design by charting a bold path that will enable organizations to harness it not only effectively, but also ethically, responsibly, and humanely. We envision a future where AI will advance businesses and society hand in hand.”

Constantinos K. Coursaris

The foreword to this book — which received financial support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Prompt — was written by Ben Shneiderman, Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland and a leading thinker in the field of human-centered AI.
