Alina Dulipovici part of a major cybersecurity research project

Professor Alina Dulipovici will participate in a major cybersecurity project that has been launched with $5.4 million in funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and MITACS.

This project, named Insider Threat Alliance, aims to develop a sustainable solution to counter these threats which are seen as the biggest security vulnerability faced by organizations. Through the Multidisciplinary Institute for Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience (IMC²), Professor Dulipovici will collaborate with research teams from Université de Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal, which will be led by:

• Nora Cuppens, Polytechnique Montréal
• Benoît Dupont, Université de Montréal
• Amal Zouaq, Polytechnique Montréal

They will be supported by 5 industrial partners: National Bank, Cybereco, Desjardins, Mondata, and Qohash.

 

Tracking insider threats

The tool created by the research team will be called Insider Threat Sentinel and will combine a proactive approach based on access control, and a reactive one based on malicious behavior detection. It will rely on techniques involving artificial intelligence.

Actions for developing this tool will be divided into 3 themes:

1. Data collection and analysis to identify risk processes
2. Development of an integrated insider threat management solution
3. Consideration of socio-technical, economic, ethical, and regulatory factors

The project will be spread over five years and will involve nearly thirty master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral students from one or other of the partner universities. Professor Dulipovici and the group led by her will mainly contribute to theme 3, which basically involves activities relating to factors including economic and socio-technical considerations, as well as testing in a real organizational context.

About Alina Dulipovici

Alina Dulipovici is an Associate Professor in HEC Montréal’s Department of Information Technologies and also the Deputy Director of Education at IMC² and a member of the Research Group on Information Systems. She holds a PhD in Computer Information Systems from Georgia State University and an MSc from HEC Montréal.

Her research focuses on InfoSec behavior, InfoSec organizational culture, and knowledge transfer in organizational contexts. Her articles have been published in several well-known journals – Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Information and Management, Knowledge Management Research and Practice – as well as in the proceedings of various major conferences on Information Technology.
