Louis Jacques Filion, 1st winner of the ANEGEPE award

For his major contributions to entrepreneurship in Brazil

The Associação Nacional de Estudos em Empreendedorismo e Gestão de Pequenas Empresas (national association for studies in entrepreneurship and small business management) (ANEGEPE) has chosen Professor Emeritus Louis Jacques Filion as the recipient of its 1st ANEGEPE award, for his outstanding contribution in the fields of entrepreneurship and SMBs to support the development of Brazil. He received this prestigious distinction at the XII annual EGEPE assembly, held in partnership with the University of Fortaleza this summer. Over the years, Professor Filion has made a number of major contributions to the development of entrepreneurship in Brazil:

  • Creation of a research community
  • Scientific advisory services to many organizations, in particular the Serviço Brasileiro de Apoio às Micro e Pequenas Empresas (Brazilian support service for micro and small businesses) (Sebrae), the Instituto Euvaldo Lodi and a number of business and industry federations
  • Many speaking engagements, including to a meeting of university rectors in Brasilia and to leaders in numerous states, cities and establishments throughout the country
  • Design and presentation of many entrepreneurship training sessions for university professors
  • Publication of 18 articles in renowned Brazilian journals; the 1st, published in 1991, remains among the most widely cited in Brazilian publications on entrepreneurship
  • Supervision and training of PhD candidates, scholars and faculty members, many of whom now hold senior positions at Brazilian universities and make significant contributions to their country’s development

About Louis Jacques Filion

Professor Filion earned an MBA from HEC Montréal in 1976, and joined the School’s faculty in 1993. He held the Rogers–J.-A. Bombardier Chair of Entrepreneurship from 1995 until his retirement in 2016. He was the driving force behind the creation of the Centre d’entrepreneuriat HEC-Poly-UdeM in 1995, and of the School’s Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in 2014.He is a prolific author, with over 100 articles and papers and 25 books to his credit, 3 of them with Brazilian co-authors. His research is concerned primarily with the activity systems of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, the visionary process, new venture creation and entrepreneurship among immigrants.
