April 4, 2017

The members of the HEC Montréal International Advisory Board (IAB) awarded their annual $5,000 scholarship to Ru Yi Gu, for her outstanding language proficiency and exceptional academic record.

The third-year student in the trilingual BBA program has a GPA of 3.9 out of 4 and has received five citations of excellence since starting her bachelor’s degree at the School. She immigrated to Quebec at age 5, and developed a strong interest in languages. She now speaks French, English, Mandarin, Spanish and can even converse in the Shanghai dialect. She is also fascinated by mathematics, and chose professional accounting as her BBA specialization. A 2016 summer internship with PwC confirmed her interest in financial accounting, as well.

This is not Ru Yi Gu’s first distinction. While studying at Vanier CEGEP, she received the Governor General’s Academic Medal for her cumulative overall average of 96.2%. She has also received several scholarships during her BBA studies in recognition of her grades and her community involvement, including from the HEC Montréal Foundation, the Fondation des CPA du Québec, the Fondation Desjardins and EY.

She is dedicated to maintaining her excellent academic record and to enjoying student life, and has taken part in several inter-university competitions. In fact, her team took first place in the 2017 HEC Montréal Défi Acad.

Her friends, family, cultural values and ongoing learning are all very important to her. In 10 years she hopes to be working for an international firm, travelling between America and Asia, where she can put her language and financial skills to good use.
