Theory Building

METH 80744A
This course aims to help students develop both logico-deductive and inductive theory-building skills. It is therefore a complement to courses on quantitative and qualitative research methods.
The course learning objectives are:

1. To develop an understanding of the nature of theory, of the types of theories that researchers build, and of the essential components of each type;

2. To develop an understanding of the core processes - either logico-deductive or inductive - of theory building;

3. To gain experience applying various frameworks for theory construction;

4. To acquire skills using tools and techniques that can be applied in the process of theory construction;

5. To gain experience by writing a theory-building piece.
