Understand the internal dynamics of financial institutions, their influence on the actions of their portfolio firms, and the impact of the regulatory and competitive environment on them.
This course allows students to understand how financial institutions function and their influence on corporate actions of firms in their portfolios. Main topics include lending decisions and monitoring activities by banks and nonbank lenders such as shadow banks and fintech companies; incentives and performance of mutual funds and hedge funds, as well as their involvement in firm policies; sell-side analyst forecasts of firm performance. The course will employ an empirical approach based on papers published in top academic journals.
