The Department of Management excels in ICGS 2026

October 20, 2026

Associate Professors Marie-Ann Betschinger and Daniel Waeger, and Professor Alaric Bourgoin, all from the Department of Management at HEC Montréal, have won the Best Paper Award at the 2026 conference of the International Corporate Governance Society (ICGS).

Co-authored with Sebastian Hafenbrädl from IESE Business School, their publication entitled “After the Backlash: CEO Flip-Flopping and Social Evaluations in Sustainability Controversies” addresses the following question: when CEOs change course following public backlash, is this seen as a lack of consistency or integrity—or as a sign of responsiveness? Their study explores how a representative sample of Canadians evaluates CEO flip-flopping in the context of environmental sustainability.

About the conference

Under the theme “Purposeful Governance in a Changing World”, the event held on October 3–4, 2026 at HEC Montréal’s Hélène-Desmarais Building welcomed more than 160 people from the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe. The ICGS, which is internationally recognized, includes members from over 180 countries and plays a pioneering role in promoting corporate governance through research, teaching and consultation.
