HEC Montréal implements guidelines for the use of generative artificial intelligence

June 5, 2025

HEC Montréal continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation and accountability by developing guidelines for the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI).

These guidelines aim to support and guide the use of this emerging technology at the School, providing a framework for its thoughtful and appropriate integration. This approach is part of the School’s desire to adhere to the principles and ethical values set out in the Montréal Declaration for Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence. The School is also a signatory to this declaration.

These guidelines apply to HEC Montréal students as well as to the School’s staff and faculty members. They are not intended to prohibit or limit the use of GenAI, but rather to support those who wish to use it by helping them develop good habits and practices.

The guidelines set out several key principles related to various aspects, including:

Support and resources are also available to interested individuals.

Research activities

More specific guidelines have also been put in place to guide anyone participating in research activities. These are in addition to the general guidelines and are based on two fundamental principles:

Transparency: Researchers must learn about and comply with the rules of good conduct regarding transparency linked to the use of GenAI tools. In some cases, this may involve clearly indicating when content originates from GenAI.

Responsibility: People participating in research activities are responsible for the quality and relevance of the content emanating from GenAI, and for its compliance with laws and regulations that concern the protection of personal information and respect for intellectual property.
