Applying for a study permit

You already have a study permit? See our webpage Extending your study permit.

About the study permit

  • You must hold a valid study permit for the duration of your studies.
  • You cannot apply for one until your CAQ is obtained.
  • It must include the name “HEC Montréal,” just like your CAQ.

Generally, the expiration date of the study permit is the same as that of the CAQ. However, the expiration date of the study permit cannot exceed the expiration date of your passport. Therefore, if your passport expires during your studies, you will need to renew both your passport and your study permit. Must cover the duration of your studies. You will be required to pay the fees associated with renewing both documents. We therefore recommend that you have a passport that remains valid beyond the duration of your studies, if possible.

Refugees as well as persons under protection or in need of protection are considered international persons. They must apply for a free study permit, but do not need to apply for a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ). They must also have documentation proving their legal status.

You must apply online from outside Canada.

Check if you are among those who, in exceptional cases, may apply within Canada or at a port of entry. However, you must have your study permit in hand by the deadline indicated in the calendar in order to begin your courses.
