Extending your study permit

Reason for the extension

Your study permit must cover the entire duration of your studies and bear the name “HEC Montréal.”

If your study permit expires before you finish your studies and you do not extent it, you will no longer be able to study and you will have to have your status restored or leave Canada. So, it's important to extend your study permit at least one day before it expires!

Also, be sure to have your family members’ (spouse and children) immigration documents renewed.

Before submitting an application

You must apply for an extension of your study permit from within Canada.

  • On your application form, you must provide a complete address (apartment number, postal code, etc.) in Canada, since IRCC will mail your study permit to you.
  • If you're not sure whether you'll be there or if you plan to move, provide the address of a reliable person who can pick up the permit for you.
  • If you have travel plans, contact us to find out the best way to renew your permit.

Validity of the CAQ

You need a valid Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for the duration of the extension you are requesting.

You must renew your CAQ if you are in one of the following situations:

  • Your current CAQ does not cover the remainder of your studies.
  • You are changing your level of studies (for example, moving from a BBA to an MSc).
  • You are coming from another learning institution. However, if you have a CAQ issued before December 6, 2024, that is still valid for the remainder of your studies and you are not changing your level of studies, you do not need to renew the CAQ.

You must apply to renew your CAQ at least 6 months before you rcurrent CAQ expires. You can then apply for an extension before your current study permit expires.

Validity of biometric data

Biometric data is valid for 10 years. Use this tool to find out if your biometric data is still valid. If that is not the case, you will need to provide them when you submit your request for an extension.

Applying online

You must apply online from Canada at least one day before your current permit expires. For all the information related to the extension of your study permit, including costs, see the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada site.

Once your application has been submitted

Within the next 24 hours, you will receive confirmation of your application (PDF, 109 KB) in the "My Inbox" section of your MyCIC.

  • Upload a copy to HEC en ligne or submit it to the Zone Info
  • If your study permit was valid at the time you submitted your extension application, you will be granted “maintained status”, which allows you to continue studying while you await a decision, as long as you do not leave Canada.
