Renewing a temporary resident visa

Temporary resident visas (TRV) are required for nationals of certain countries. They are needed for entering Canada and returning after a trip abroad.

Renewing your TRV is not mandatory if you do not need to leave Canada and return by air. However, we recommend renewing it so that you remain free to travel in the event of an emergency.

Before applying

You may apply for a new TRV only after obtaining an extension of your study permit or your post-graduation work permit.

Before starting your application, learn about the application process and check current processing times by selecting the following options:

  • What are you applying for? Temporary residence (visiting, studying, working)
  • Which temporary residence application? Visitor visa (from inside Canada)
