Applying for a work permit for a graduate student’s spouse

After graduation

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an open work permit, your spouse or common-law partner must be applying while you hold a job classified under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 of the National Occupational Classification and must include the following documents with their work permit application:

  • A letter from your employer confirming your current employment, or a copy of your job offer or employment contract;
  • Copies of your three most recent pay stubs.

Applying for a permit

Option 1: Simultaneous applications

You submit your post-graduation work permit application and your spouse's or common-law partner's work permit application at the same time.

Option 2: Application submitted later

Your spouse or common-law partner may submit their own application once you can demonstrate that you meet the eligibility requirements.

Biometrics

Your spouse or common-law partner must provide their biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) for any new application submitted from within Canada. If they have already provided biometrics as part of a study permit or work permit application, they remain valid for 10 years. Otherwise, biometrics will need to be provided when applying to extend their status or change their status in Canada.

  1. Submit the application online from within Canada.
  2. Save time by paying the biometric fee at the same time as the application fee.
  3. After submitting the application, you will receive a biometric instruction letter. You must then book an appointment at a Service Canada location to provide your biometrics. The Service Canada office closest to HEC Montréal is located at 540 Beaumont Avenue.
  4. Consult the guide How to give your fingerprints and photo for complete instructions.
