EDUlib proves highly popular

Montréal, Québec , November  5, 2012 - With over 2,800 students enrolled in less than two weeks, HEC Montréal is pleased to salute the success of EDUlib, a platform offering free online university courses, and a first in Quebec.

Starting on November 12, the EDUlib platform, launched on October 22, will be offering the first cours Introduction au marketing, taught by HEC Montréal professors Johanne Brunet and Yannik St-James. Two other courses – Comprendre les états financiers and Problèmes et politiques économiques : les outils essentiels d’analyse – will be added in winter and spring 2013, respectively. The selection of online courses will continue to be expanded to meet demand.

There is a great deal of interest in such courses. Visitors to the EDUlib site to date have been from some fifty different countries, although the majority of them are Canadian. More than 1,000 individuals have already enrolled in the Introduction au marketing course. Note that there are only a few days left before the enrolment deadline. By November 5, more than 950 people had also enrolled for Comprendre les états financiers and another 650 for Problèmes et politiques économiques : les outils essentiels d’analyse.

“This is a promising learning method with tremendous potential,” says Professor Jean Talbot, Director of the Department of Teaching Development and Innovation. “It’s phenomenal just to be able to bring more than 1,200 people from widely different backgrounds together to take the same course. Beyond learning, it’s an opportunity for more than a thousand people to talk with one another and forge bonds around a topic of interest to them. HEC Montréal is proud to have initiated this tremendous EDUlib platform.”  

Participants can not only take the courses from a distance, but also share their comments or post questions on a discussion forum, turn in regularly assigned homework and take tests – if they pass, they will receive an attestation that they have successfully completed the course requirements. Students in the EDUlib courses, which each run for six weeks, will not receive any university credits or diploma, however.
