Description

This course examines how firms' location and investment choices depend on the availability of development finance instruments. It does so by connecting global development financing mechanisms to strategic decision-making in international business, focusing on how these tools shape entry strategies, partnerships, and value chain integration in emerging markets.

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the mechanisms, tools, policies, and programs that shape development finance. It examines the historical evolution of financing for development and highlights emerging modalities such as climate finance, green bonds, and financial instruments aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students will learn to identify and mobilize funding from national sources, international donors, and the private-sector, as well as to use key databases to enhance transparency and monitor the allocation of resources across sectors and regions.

The course emphasizes the role of development finance and impact investing in advancing sustainable development and reducing global inequalities. Particular attention is devoted to the design of community and economic investments that generate economic, environmental, and cultural benefits. This approach applies a triple-bottom-line framework, which evaluates initiatives in terms of their capacity to create positive outcomes for profits, people, and the planet.
