Guillaume Durocher has been working in retail since the tender age of 15. He started out bagging groceries before he was promoted to the produce department. Step by step, with a little determination and a whole lot of hard work, he climbed one rung after another.
Today, 20 years later, he’s the Customer Experience Manager – Produce at Sobeys. In this role, he is in charge of more than 2,500 separate points of sale across Canada.
In March, he completed the Certification in Retail Operations program at Executive Education HEC Montréal.
Why did he sign up in the first place? “Sobeys is big on professional development,” Guillaume explained. “I found out about this program on social media and saw that it was exclusively for retail professionals. The description fit my needs to a T. My manager was all for it, so I enrolled.”
What did Guillaume like the most about it? “To be honest, the whole thing: the structure, the way the curriculum was divided up, the topics that were covered, the lecturers and the speakers. It was fantastic from beginning to end! It’s exactly what industry executives and professionals need.”
One of the highlights for Guillaume was hearing from Fady Dagher, the Chief of Police for the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service. “I won’t forget his presentation any time soon,” said Guillaume. “The way he engages and motivates his teams is incredible. And his immersive training program is an inspiration. I really appreciated his unique take on things.”
He was just as impressed by the contributions of program director JoAnne Labrecque and mentor Alain Brunet who, between them, have over 60 years of retail experience.
He also took advantage of the opportunity to expand his network. He still checks in regularly with five of his fellow participants: “We all come from different organizations, but we’re going through some very similar things. I’ve been able to talk to them about different aspects of my work and they’ve helped steer me toward the right decisions.”
So would he recommend the program? “Recommend it? No. I insist on it!” he laughed. “I think all retail CEOs should give their future a closer look and have their people sign up. It will help them develop their ideas and encourage them to embrace a growth and innovation mindset. It was a fantastic experience and I got a great deal out of it.“
