Language matters at HEC Montréal

To understand HEC Montréal’s linguistic mosaic, it helps to view it within the greater context of Canada, Quebec and Montréal.

Canada is an officially bilingual country: its two official languages are English and French.

Quebec is one of the 10 provinces of the Canadian federation. In Quebec, French is the only official language, and it is spoken by the majority of the population. However, Montréal is an international, multilingual city, where English and French speakers live side by side. For its part, HEC Montréal is a French-speaking establishment, so it logically follows that the language of instruction is French in most programs of study

Studying and student life at HEC Montréal require a mastery of French, even though reference texts and manuals may be in English in a number of disciplines. As such, sufficient knowledge of English is also necessary.

For more information on the linguistic requirements that apply to admission, refer to the page for the program that interests you.

For more on the linguistic requirements that must be met during the program of study, refer to HEC Montréal’s policy on communication quality.
