From a value creation perspective, a company’s reputation is its most important strategic asset. Reputation is a key element that makes it easier to achieve strategic goals such as creating value, driving profitable growth and developing a sustainable competitive advantage.
But corporate reputations are more vulnerable than ever these days, with globalization, an increasingly complex business environment, economic and financial upheavals, the exponential growth in social media and the speed of media coverage. These factors can lead to hard-to-predict crises that have the power to destroy a carefully crafted reputation. Corporate directors and risk management professionals recently established that reputational risk is the biggest threat facing today’s businesses.
Protecting and developing this asset is also very dependent on external factors and exacerbated by social media. An exploratory study conducted by CIRANO and Preventa in 2012 shows that only half of the Quebec companies interviewed acknowledge the importance of reputation, and none of them appear to be taking a proactive approach to managing it.
