Designed to complement the work already being done within organizations to prime the next generation of leaders, the Development Acceleration Program for High-potential Managers will help you streamline your transition toward positions with greater responsibility. The next generation of senior executives will need to understand, make decisions and engage employees within an increasingly challenging environment.

This program benefits organizations in many ways, including by helping them address their future executive resource needs. Led by a group of senior faculty and current and former business executives, the program constitutes a unique learning experience for participants preparing to meet the inherent requirements of a senior management position.

We feel that there are at least four reasons for you to sign yourself or someone else up for this program.

1. Leverage talent

The next generation of executives will have to understand issues, make decisions and mobilize their people in an increasingly challenging climate marked by global issues, shorter turnaround times and narrower margins. The only way to prepare for this is to invest in the development of today’s budding executives so they can make a difference tomorrow.

2. Rev up development

Many organizations have singled out a number of particularly promising individuals among their top-performing managers and specialists who will be the focus of their succession efforts over the coming five to ten years. This will require concrete effort, increased responsibilities and participation in strategic projects. However, even if these initiatives prove to be a success, they are still are very time-consuming. And organizations are feeling the growing pressures associated with the dwindling number of talented individuals from which to choose.

3. Broaden perspectives

High-potential executives are often motivated and action- and results-oriented experts in their field. The only thing they need to work on to be promoted to a position of leadership is the ability to develop a big picture view of the organization, adopt strategic ways of thinking and fully grasp the complexity and demands of a more senior position.

4. Interact with others

By adopting a primarily internal approach to professional development, organizations take the risk of not exposing promising candidates to diverse points of view and situations. It is in their best interest, and the best interest of the company, for them to have to deal with others, to get a closer look at the way they do business and develop a strategic, open-minded approach to innovation.

Note(s)

This is an interactive, dynamic and intensive training program, divided into three modules. The first three-day session and third two-day session will be held at HEC Montréal. During the month in between (module 2), a priority or issue determined jointly by participants and their organization will be analyzed in depth.

Module 1: Thinking (and deciding) like a senior executive – 3 days – HEC Montréal

The purpose of this module is to help participants adopt the mindset of a senior executive. Using analysis grids and management tools, participants will make a series of strategic decisions.

  • Evaluating the transition toward a senior executive position
  • Turning strategic thinking into strategic action
  • Using innovation to create value for your clients
  • Attracting, retaining and motivating key employees during a workforce shortage
  • Understanding the relationship between financial analysis and operational performance
  • Helming a successful restructuring initiative

Module 2: Contributing like a senior executive – 1 month between modules 1 and 3

Under this module, participants will prepare a business case related to a strategic issue or priority they have chosen in conjunction with their organization. During the month between the first and last modules, participants must analyze the situation and come up with an action plan and/or recommendations. Participants may refer to the instructors from the first module for additional information and support as required.

Module 3: Acting like a senior executive – 2 days – HEC Montréal

This module aims to help participants develop their credibility and powers of persuasion and gain a deeper understanding of the senior executive's role so they can function effectively at the executive committee level. At the beginning of the module, participants will be asked to present their business case and convince their audience of the merit of their project.
The module will also feature frank, open discussions with several experienced executives, who will share their insights on the following topics:

  • How to contribute effectively to an executive committee
  • Turning your vision into reality
  • What to do in your first 100 days as a senior executive
  • Identifying shared expectations of organizations and executives
  • Understanding the part you play in ethics and good governance.

They come from a wide range of industries and backgrounds and have a diverse array of personal profiles.
