A -  If you are coming on an exchange for one term only (less than six months) you do not need the study permit issued by the Government of Canada (or the CAQ).

However, should you decide to extend your stay in Canada, you will need a CAQ and a study permit to stay here over 6 months. Always keep in mind that your exchange at HEC Montréal cannot be extend for an extra semester even if you have those documents. Obtaining a CAQ and a study permit could also allow you to work on campus as you are studying at HEC Montreal.

B - If you are coming on an exchange for two terms (more than six months) you must obtain a study permit issued by the Government of Canada once you have obtained your Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ)

Response to your application for a study permit:

Once your application is analysed and processed, you will receive a study permit retrieval letter (or an email). This letter is not your official study permit, you must print it and present this letter or e-mail confirmation to the immigration officer at your point of entry into Canada (at customs).

Upon presentation of this letter and the documents that are required for the permit application, you will be given your study permit.

It is important to have your immigration papers with you when you enter the country and to confirm your registration with HEC Montréal.

You will also need them for other procedures in Québec (insurance, bank, driver's license).

**HEC Montréal has the right to cancel your courses if you do not have your immigration papers for the first day of school.**

Tips on submitting a successful study permit application :

  • Make sure that your file is complete. A single missing or non-compliant document will delay your request by several weeks.
  • Because the documents you send will not be returned to you, keep copies of all documents sent.
  • Students living or who have lived for over six months in the past year in certain countries may be asked to submit to a medical examination by a physician authorized by the Government of Canada. This potential formality can take over a month. You must cover the cost of the medical examination. Contact the Canadian immigration office responsible for your country as soon as possible for more information.
