When you take the bus, you will need either a ticket or exact change for your fare. A paid bus or metro fare entitles you to a bus-to-metro or metro-to-bus transfer that is valid for 2 hours. A bus/metro ticket gives you access to the metro only once, but you can transfer between buses several times.
Bus/metro fare: $3.00
6-ticket card: $14.25
To plan your itinerary, refer to the STM Web site’s Tous azimuts page or Google Maps.
You can also find precise schedules for a given bus stop and metro frequency according to line and time of day.

In North America, forget trains, buses offer a lot more flexibility! Many companies offer daily service within Canada and to the USA. The bus terminal is at Métro Berri-UQAM and is the departure and arrival point for most lines.
The train network is not as well developed as in Europe and is much slower. Montreal-New York is 11 hours by train but only 7 hours by car. Nevertheless it may be an interesting option (e.g. winter conditions). VIA Rail offers service within Canada while AmTrak operates out of Montreal to the USA. Students with an ISIC card get discounts of up to 35%.
