Supervised Field Projects towards a M. Sc. in Administration - Employer Guide

Introduction

As part of their training, Master of Science in Administration students have the opportunity to complete a supervised field project, which will enable them to integrate and implement the concepts they have learned during their courses towards their Master's degree.

"Field" is used here in a general sense and includes businesses, organizations, and agencies such as government agencies, NGOs and non-profit organizations.

Our students have solid education and extensive training that gives them a comprehensive vision of management issues.  Students who specialize in one of the participating options of the supervised project stream can bring you up-to-date expertise in their area of specialization.  The Supervised Field Project represents 405 hours, namely from 10 to 12 weeks (including the drafting of a report).  The work done by our students is therefore comprehensive and can give you the opportunity to realize a project for which you do not have the required time or expertise.

Propose a project

We invite you to fill out the Proposal for a Supervised Field Project form and send it to Ms. Danielle Beaudoin, Counsellor at Career Management Services, HEC Montréal, either by email at danielle.beaudoin@hec.ca or by fax at 514 340-5680.

Supervision

You must designate a supervisor within your organization.  This person will monitor the project as described in the Proposal for a Supervised Field Project form or the Application for Approval of a Supervised Field Project form (provided by the student).  A professor will ensure the supervision of the student within HEC Montréal and follow-up, if need be, with the company.  He/she decides with the student the terms and conditions of the supervised project and the nature of the written report.

Evaluation

The written report on the project completed by our student within your organization must include the following elements:

  • description of the objectives or the issues
  • methodology used
  • results obtained or solutions secured
  • recommendations or thought development considerations

The professor responsible for the project determines the exact content of the report.  A jury of two HEC Montréal professors conducts the evaluation.  The student is responsible for sending you a copy of this document.  We suggest you contact the professor responsible and share your evaluation of the report with him/her.  Your comments will be considered by the members of the jury.

Compensation

A compensation can be offered to the student for the work accomplished during his/her internship.  This compensation will be the subject of an agreement between the student and the organization.

Tax Credits

Government programs to help employers hire interns are generally available to companies. These companies are responsible for verifying their eligibility to these programs directly with the agencies concerned prior to hiring an intern.
