How to give to HEC Montréal

Every year, thousands of alumni and friends of HEC Montréal give to our fundraising campaign. Most of these donations go to the general fund, which allows the School to meet the most pressing needs.

Your donation to the general fund allows us to:

  • encourage deserving students to undertake or continue their studies;
  • establish and promote a learning environment incorporating the latest information technologies;
  • design new programs of study reflecting market needs;
  • improve the library's collections;
  • attract and retain renowned professors.

You could give by many different ways:

+  Student calls

+  Volunteer calls

+  Solicitation in the mail

+  Source deductions

+  Gift of a floor tile

Recognition inscribed in stone

  • Acknowledging everything you received from your alma mater
  • Acknowledging a child's educational achievement
  • Acknowledging a professor's contribution
  • Acknowledging the School's values

There are all kinds of reasons for making a donation by having your name or someone else's inscribed in one of the stone tiles on the ground floor of the 3000 chemin de la Côte-Sainte-Catherine building.

A donation of $1,000 will see your generosity permanently inscribed in stone.

+  Matching gift

+  Planned giving

Planned gifts are an integral part of financial, tax and estate planning. There are many different ways of making a planned gift to HEC Montréal. Each of the options described below offers its own significant tax and financial benefits.

You can also perpetuate your own name or pay tribute to someone else with a named endowment created as part of a testamentary gift. This is done by making a bequest in your will.

+  Outright gifts

+  Charitable gift annuity

A charitable gift annuity is the result of an agreement with the HEC Montréal Development Office whereby the donor makes an irrevocable contribution of capital to HEC Montréal, part of which is used to purchase the right for the donor, or a person designated by the donor, to receive lifetime payments, or payments for a specified period of time, from an insurance company or trust company.

The difference between the initial capital contribution and purchase price of the annuity is the gift to HEC Montréal.

The main advantages of a charitable gift annuity are as follows:

  • better income for the annuitant;
  • investment fully guaranteed by contract for the lifetime of the annuitant or for a specified period of time;
  • no management worries;
  • no risk in the event of a decline in interest rates;
  • opportunity to make a significant contribution to the development of HEC Montréal.

HEC Montréal immediately issues the donor with an official receipt in the amount of the gift; in other words, the difference between the initial capital contribution and the purchase price of the annuity.

+  Gift of residual interest

A gift of residual interest is a gift whereby the donor makes an outright irrevocable transfer of the ownership of property to HEC Montréal while continuing to enjoy the use of the property or the income it generates for life or for a specified period of time.

+  Deferred gifts

+  Bequest

A will is a document that details how you want your estate to be distributed when you die.

If you do not make a will, your assets will be distributed according to provincial legislation, with no consideration for your wishes or the needs of your next of kin, even though you may have spent a lifetime building up and judiciously managing these assets.

Once you have provided for the financial security of your next of kin by drawing up or reviewing and rewriting your will, you may decide to make a bequest, according to your financial means, to contribute to the development of HEC Montréal.

  • A bequest is simple and easy to make.  Donors can make provision in their wills for
  • a gift of cash or a gift-in-kind;
  • a gift of part, all, or a residual part of the estate;
  • a gift of the proceeds from a life insurance policy;
  • a gift of all or the residuum of an annuity or pension plan;
  • a testamentary trust.

Any legal document concerning a bequest to HEC Montréal must be made in the name of the Corporation de l'École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Montréal.

For further information on a bequest or to get a copy of the guide entitled Bequest Form and Clauses Suggested for Use by Lawyers and Notaries (Format PDF), you may contact Carole Fortin, Planned Giving Officer, at 514 340-6332, or Jocelyne Gonthier, Director of Major and Planned Gifts, at 514 340-6958.

+  Gift of life insurance

Individuals can donate the death benefit from a life insurance policy to HEC Montréal and allocate these funds to projects that they feel particularly strongly about.

There are three ways of making this type of gift:

  • by purchasing a new life insurance policy and irrevocably assigning it (transfer of ownership) to HEC Montréal;
  • by irrevocably transferring an existing life insurance policy to HEC Montréal;
  • by naming HEC Montréal, in the policy or in the donor's will, as the beneficiary of the life insurance policy.

Making a gift while protecting your heirs

Life insurance enables you to make a gift right now while guaranteeing the financial security of your next of kin. This is because the gift of a large amount to HEC Montréal entitles you to a substantial tax credit. You can then use the proceeds from the tax credit to purchase an insurance policy with a death benefit equal to or greater than the value of your gift. At your death, your heirs will receive this capital to replace the value of the amount donated.

Any legal document concerning a life insurance policy to the benifit of HEC Montréal must be made in the name of the Corporation de l'École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Montréal.

+  Charitable trust

A charitable trust is the result of an agreement with HEC Montréal whereby a donor creates an irrevocable trust and names HEC Montréal as the remainder beneficiary.

For this type of gift, the capital must be placed irrevocably in a trust and must be left intact for the term of the trust. During this period, the donor (or another person) receives the return on the invested capital.

At the end of the fixed term of the trust or at the death of the beneficiary or beneficiaries, the principal of the trust is paid to HEC Montréal.

A charitable trust can be set up during the lifetime of the donor or under the donor's will (testamentary trust).

+  Mixed gifts

+  Gift of securities

A gift of securities is a gift of shares, savings bonds, mutual trust fund units or other similar securities listed on a major stock exchange (Canadian, American or international).

A gift of securities can be in the form of an outright gift or a deferred gift bequeathed in a will. The advantage for the donor of giving securities to HEC Montréal lies in the excellent tax benefits related to this type of gift. It is therefore preferable to donate securities rather than to sell them and donate the proceeds from the sale.

In the case of a gift of securities, the donor will not pay any federal or provincial income tax on the capital gain, whereas in the case of a gift of the actual proceeds from the sale of the securities, 50% of the capital gain is taxable.

+  Gift in kind

A gift-in-kind is a gift of movable or immovable property. Such gifts can be made to HEC Montréal during the donor's lifetime or they can be bequeathed in the donor's will.

The property donated to HEC Montréal must be deemed useful and necessary for the School to carry out its activities or must have a market potential and a high market value. The property must be appraised according to established procedures and standards. HEC Montréal also takes into account installation, maintenance and preservation costs, and accepts only gifts that are made with no conditions attached.

Any legal document concerning a planned gift must be made in the name of the Corporation de l'École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Montréal.

HEC Montréal Heritage Club

HEC Montréal has designed a recognition program to thank all those who contribute to the development of the School and its students. In particular, it salutes the contribution of planned giving donors. If you are thinking of making a planned gift, please let us know, so that we can enrol you in the HEC Montréal Heritage Club. We carefully protect the anonymity of donors who so request, of course.

Confidentiality

All discussions between donors and their professional advisors will be handled with the utmost integrity and confidentiality.

+  Named endowment

A named endowment fund is a separate investment fund established to guarantee long-term support for HEC Montréal. To protect the value of the capital donated, only the income or part of the income from the fund will be used. The income is allocated on the basis of conditions and criteria set by the donor.

A lasting contribution
A named endowment is a good solution for donors looking to provide ongoing, lasting support for HEC Montréal. It is an exceptional way to honour and perpetuate the name of a loved one, or a group of people, or to salute a unique contribution to the School or the community.

A named endowment:

  • may bear the donor's name or the name of anyone the donor chooses;
  • is a way for an individual, family or other group of friends or other people to support a specific cause at HEC Montréal;
  • provides ongoing support in a field of teaching or research;
  • may be used to found a university research chair;
  • may be used to create a scholarship fund - an excellent way for businesses to play an active part in training the next generation.

This support may take the form of annual scholarships, bursaries or research grants, the acquisition of teaching equipment, the creation of a laboratory or any other initiative that will contribute to the School's development.

Easy to do
A named endowment fund can be established with a donation during the donor's lifetime, or a bequest in his or her will. If it is created during the donor's lifetime, the donor and representatives of the Development Office must draw up and sign an agreement setting out the conditions applying to the fund: its objectives, its name, how it is constituted, the selection committee, criteria and substitute recipients for scholarships, and its visibility.

When the donor draws up a will containing instructions to establish a named endowment, no other document is necessary. It is best to inform the HEC Montréal Foundation of the donor's plans, however, to ensure that the objectives of the fund are feasible and in line with HEC Montréal's programs and development plans.

For further information on creating a named endowment, please contact Jocelyne Gonthier, Director of Major and Planned Gifts, at 514 340-6958.

+  Research chairs

Much of our investment in research at HEC Montréal goes to our different chairs, which play a vital role in advancing knowledge. There are 23 such chairs, conducting research in a variety of management fields.

Creating a research chair and supporting its ongoing activities is a very costly commitment, calling for an initial investment of $2 million. Once this amount has been converted into an endowment, it provides a regular annual source of support for the chair.

Raising the amounts needed to launch and sustain a research chair is a constant challenge, and generous supporters are essential if we are to meet these financial requirements.

For further information on financing a research chair, please contact Brigitte Dupriez, Director - Gift Request Activities, at 514 340-6285, or Jocelyne Gonthier, Director of Major and Planned Gifts, at 514 340-6958.
