FAQ - Registration M.Sc.

+  How many credits do I need to be registered for to be considered a full-time student?

  • Thesis stream: Students are always considered full-time, as the thesis seminar is compulsory for all terms until the thesis is submitted.
  • Supervised Project stream: Students are considered full-time if they are registered for at least 9 credits.

Summer term exception: Students are considered full-time if they are registered for at least 6 credits.

The same rules apply to courses taken to fulfil the option’s requirements, and to prerequisite courses.

+  What's the difference between preparatory and prerequisites courses?
Do I have to complete them before I start my master’s courses?

Option supervisors may require students to take (typically undergraduate) preparatory courses (3 credits) on admission to the program, if they deem that the students’ academic background does not meet the requirements of the chosen option and profile.

It is important to note that these preparatory courses must be passed within one year and that they count toward the average.

The program office may also require students to take prerequisite courses if their academic background is in a discipline other than management. Every 1-credit prerequisite course lasts 45 hours.

Preparatory courses and prerequisites can be taken at the same time as master’s courses. For more information, students should contact their option supervisor.

+  How much work is involved in completing and passing a course?

A 3-credit course involves 45 hours of classroom attendance, including exams, and 90 hours of independent study (readings, studies, exercises, projects, etc.). Unless otherwise noted, all M.Sc. program courses are worth 3 credits.

+  What is the frequency of courses given over the course of the term?

M.Sc. courses and 3-credit preparatory courses are given as follows, depending on the term:

  • Fall and Winter terms: mainly daytime, 3 hours a week for 14 weeks.
One-credit prerequisite courses are given 3 hours a week for 5 weeks.
  • Summer term: intensive, 2 3-hour sessions, 2 days a week for 7 weeks.

Note that exams are included in the number of weeks.

+  What should I do if a course is full and I am unable to replace it with another course?

You should put your name on the waiting list. That way, you will be registered for the course should enough spots open up.

+  What should I do if I have technical problems using HEC en ligne?

Refer to the instructions on the HEC en ligne home page. Feel free to refer to the Registration Guide located on the first page of your online account or Vidéos d’aide à l’inscription (In French only)
