Budget-planning advice and tools

If you’re having unexpected financial difficulties, you can find a range of potential solutions at Student Services. Feel free to meet with a student advisor anytime during Student Services operating hours. No appointment is needed.

Some advice

  • Draft a budget for the entire academic year.
  • Stick to your budget.
  • Analyze and assess your personal expenses in depth.
  • Evaluate your spending habits.
  • If your essential expenses are greater than your revenue, consider whether you are in a position to work part-time during your studies.
  • Avoid turning to credit.

Some tools

  • If your government financial aid request has yet to be analyzed, the Government of Quebec’s Student Aid assessment simulator allows you to find out how much financial aid you will receive during the academic year. Note that the simulator’s calculation is based on the information you provide.
  • The Government of Canada’s CanLearn Web site provides an online Financial Planner that includes a Budget Estimator.
  • Réseau de protection du consommateur du Québec, the province’s consumer protection network.
  • The YourMoney Web site.
  • The Canadian Bankers Association provides a range of information and advice, including:
    • Publications written to help consumers better understand the financial world
    • A revenue and monthly expense calculator
    • Advice on fraud and security
    • Your rights and responsibilities
